A Perfectly Sound Scenario With Blue Sweater

A Perfectly Sound Scenario, where we ask musicians their favourite albums and the perfect scenario or time to listen to it. This time we met with Wollongong based artist Malachi Hurley who goes by the stage name Blue Sweater. After cutting his teeth in bands such as Good Lekker and The Morning Mood, Malachi has branched out into composing heartfelt songs that dance around the brooding trials and tribulations of existence. His first debut single titled "Weather" is a mixture of pop, soul and R&B that encapsulates the process of grief and the struggle to lay to rest old habits. The response we got from Malachi this time round will leave you feeling dazed and confused, wondering how you never knew of these fantastic artists in the first place. So without delay, let's dive in.

Bismillah - Peter Cat Recording Co

Release Date: 7 June 2019

Length: 50:55

Label: Panache

Producer: Peter Cat Recording Co

Scenario: You know those moments in life where everything seems to be overwhelming, where the slightest inconvenience in your day could cause you to implode - well next time you find yourself in this scenario, throw this album on and thank me later.

Why: This album has everything I love, luscious brass, nylon string guitars, and a lyric about erections.

Kokoroko - Kokoroko

Release Date: March 8, 2019

Length: 24:25

Label: Brownswood recordings

Producer: Kokoroko

Scenario: You’ve just showered, you’ve done your hair, you’re smelling good - now you are ready to hit the pub with your collection of delinquent friends and family, but something is missing - some rhythm. That’s when you head on over to the record player and drop thy needle onto Kokoroko’s self-titled EP…equilibrium has been restored.

Why: I absolutely love this EP, I think it encapsulates the beauty of music, especially in the realm of contemporary afrobeat. The impeccable musicianship that is heard on this album

History - America’s

Release Date: 3 November 1975

Length: 38:21

Label: Warner Records

Producer: George Martin

Scenario: Imagine yourself driving 110 km/h down the Hume Highway, heading to the belly of god’s country. The wind rustles through your receding hairline, whilst the smell of worn bitumen embeds itself into your nostrils. The only thing that could make this moment better is by listening to America’s greatest hits from 1971-1974.

Why: This album was actually the first record I ever purchased. With that in mind, I felt inclined to throw it in this list. Maybe it’s nostalgia getting the best of me, but you can’t deny the impeccable songwriting on this album.

Con Todo El Mundo - Khruangbin

Release Date: 26 January 2018

Length: 41:56

Label: Dead Ocean Night Time Stories

Producer: Khruangbin, Steve Christensen

Scenario: The rain trickles off the terracotta tiles of your roof and the landlord still hasn’t waterproofed your bedroom ceiling, things aren’t looking great. So you turn to old faithful in the vain hope that’ll ease the pain of your room slowly filling with water.

Why: This album opened a lot of doors up for me, especially in terms of guitar playing. Definitely made me change the way I approach writing music

An Insatiable High - Masayoshi Takanaka

Release Date: 1 December 1977

Length: 41:29

Label: Kitty Films

Producer: Masayoshi Takanaka

Scenario: Once again, you have left that assignment to the absolute last minute - all confidence in your academic ability withers away as the minutes etch closer to the deadline. Honestly, you’ll need a miracle to pull this rabbit out of the hat. So instead, you throw on Masayoshi Takanaka’s virtuosic album ‘An Insatiable High’ and avoid all responsibility for the next 35 minutes.

Why: The only reason why this album needs to be on this list is that it is likely to trigger a fire alarm if played at the right frequency.
