MEET LOOSE CONTENT AND THEIR NEW “PET ALSATIAN”

Melbourne/Naarm based alt-rock outfit Loose Content have recently announced their debut EP Costumes and released a new lead single “Pet Alsatian” to boast; a bouncing pop-rock anthem that harbours existential themes and poetic lyrics behind it’s clean tones and cheery harmonies.

We spoke to the band about their new music, their hometown of Byron Bay, and their busy touring schedule. Keep an eye out for Loose Content and their debut EP Costumes, set to make waves in the very near future!

While this new single compliments your previous release Where the Hollow People Sleep, your progression as a band — and from your alt-rock origins is also clear. “Pet Alsatian”, with its repeated melodic chorus and jumping rhythm, seems closer to art pop or even artful Brit pop, although with a distinctly Australian voice and charm.

Is this sound one you have worked on for the upcoming EP Costumes? Or is it one that has developed more naturally?

We wouldn’t say we have ever really worked on ‘our’ sound, it’s always come naturally and that progression is more from our ever changing influences. I think our upcoming EP has a rather diverse sound across all the tracks and this is just reflective of us as individual artists and as a collective.

The band originally formed in Byron Bay and has since relocated to Naarm/Melbourne. When did this happen? What has changed for the band since then, and how would you compare your hometown’s music scene to that of the big city?

We moved to Melbourne at the beginning of 2024. A lot has changed over the past year or so for us, we’ve never played so many live shows and travelled as much up and down the East Coast playing different places. The scene in Melbourne is definitely a lot more saturated, everyone you meet is in a band. But the city is so big and such an accommodating place that we have always had venues to play at and to grow an audience.

The scene around Byron is very different as there is just not a lot of places to play as an original band- we ended up putting on our own all ages gigs as there were not really any venues that could accommodate that. Putting on our own shows was always a lot of fun and definitely had a significant impact on us a band, finding different ways to cultivate an audience.

Over the past years, you’ve played with some pretty iconic bands: Magic Dirt, The Cruel Sea and Bôa, to name a few. How does it feel to play beside some of these more renowned and seasoned acts at such young ages?

Yeah we have been very lucky! It is a lot of fun to get to play with those kind of bands and get to pick their brains as well as just hang out, the oldies still know how to have fun for sure! It’s always interesting to play with these acts that have such an established crowd as you’re not sure if they will dig our music but for the most part their fans and audience have been so supportive and welcoming to us.
