Meet Boy Pablo

After some online tech interview mishaps, and a quick introduction from his dad, we got to chatting with Boy Pablo. Just as us, he was sat in his bedroom in front of a laptop, our new way of connecting with feature artists for this issue. We got on to Boy Pablo for this issue because of his unique place in the music industry as a Chilean artist who calls Norway home. We talked about his album Wichito Rico (which is now available on all streaming platforms!), his first pinch me moment, and how he sources inspiration. For someone who has accomplished as much as he has at such a young age, he doesn’t take things too seriously and is paving the way for many indie pop artists around the world. Boy Pablo is only going up from here. So have a read, have a listen to the album, have a boogie and enjoyyyy! Only part of the interview is previewed here the rest is in our third print issue! You can purchase here!

WANDERER: So how are you?

BOY PABLO: I'm good. I'm a little bit tired, but I'm good.

We'll jump into it then. So you're currently planning to release your Album Wichito Rico (we definitely did not pronounce that correctly). What inspired the name of the album?

Wichito Rico is a Chilean expression. My parents are from Chile and my whole family is from Chile. So I heard this expression growing up and then I was like, What does it really mean? And it means either handsome boy or a sexy boy. I thought that was really funny because I'm not, or I hope I'm not, and I do not consider myself, a sexy boy or like a fuck boy kind of type. So I thought it was funny to try to make a character that’s kind or quirky and doesn’t live up to what the expression means.

I love that you're making a joke out of it, it seems like you don't take yourself too seriously despite being so successful for only being 21. You've got two albums as well as countless singles and EP's. What was the first sort of pinch me moment that you've experienced?

I think it was the first concert I did with my band outside of Norway. Because we played a lot in our hometown and then the capital of Norway up north and suddenly we were playing in front of 300 people in Warsaw in Poland. I didn't understand that they were there because of us, because we were the main attraction, [before that] we always were the support band or something. So it was a really cool experience.

How old were you when you played that first gig in Poland?

I was 19, it was two years ago. Yeah, it was really fun.

A few rapid fire questions for you:

What's your favourite t-shirt?

Uh, it's this white one, really baggy with a picture of a boxer on it.

What's the first thing that you do when you have nothing to do?

Play FIFA.

What's your favourite  color?

Hmm, light blue or like a baby blue. Yeah.

What did you want to be when you grew up?

A Musician, I always wanted to be a musician or a footballer.

What would you say is the most important thing in your life?

That's a deep one. I think, I guess my family and God.
